Description
This exceptional violin bears a real label: Joseph Guarnerius fecit Cremonae anno 1714 IHS. The "14" is writen in with ink. I have appraised violins for over 40 years for State Farm and I do believe the body of the violin to be this masters work. Unfortunately, a French Violin Shop got ahold of the violin and stripped the original varnish. The violin is a composite as I believe the neck and scroll to be French work from the 1800s. If you look at the edge work, it is thin the Italian way. I checked the Walter Hama book to see about the F holes and they are consistent with that of Joseph Guarneri. As always with a violin like this one, there maybe another dealer with a different opinion than mine. In any case, it is offered at a price that won't break the bank. Being a member of The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra I have used this violin there 2 summers ago with no complaints. The violin is a HUGE fountain of warm lovely overtones and great in the higher positions. The condition of the violin is very good and the violin is ready to play with no work required, There are very few scuffs or scrapes one would expect for a violin of this age. The pegs match and work great. The strings are near new and good. I was asked a question about the measurements so...here they are: Top Bout-6 1/2 inches. C Bout- 4 7/8 inches. Bottom Bout- 8 1/16 inches. Length of back- 14 inches. Overall length- 23 1/2 inches. There is fine grain spruce on the table with lovely flamed maple on the ribs, back, neck and scroll.
