    Description

    Here is a mint condition example of one of the best sounding (and best looking) compact bookshelf speaker designs of all time, the a/d/s L400e, produced circa 1994. The 1994 version was the best and final update of the ADS L400 series. This pristine factory-matched pair, bearing sequential serial numbers, has had only one previous owner since they were purchased new here in Seattle, 27 years ago.
    The L400e is a two way design.  It features a 7 inch woofer, with a butyl surround (so these will never need to be"refoamed") and a cone made from ADS's proprietary "Stifflite" material that permitted better excursion than standard materials.  At the high end is a 1 inch dome tweeter.  The L400e's produce a flat (within 3 dB) frequency response from 60 Hz to 23kHz, and their 8 ohm design functions perfectly with amps providing anywhere from 10 to 75 watts of continuous power per channel (and they will effortlessly handle much higher peaks).
    The sound is wonderful.  As the L400 series was described by Ken Rockwell (find his very thorough review online) "The ADS L400 is what we expect from a New England paper-coned, dome-tweetered sealed speaker: smooth, uncolored sound. The ADS L400 has the fabled polite New England sound: nothing is emphasized. The highs are sweet. The very high treble might be just a tiny bit stronger than usual, giving cymbal ticks a nice presence. The ADS L400 doesn't emphasize anything; any errors would be errors of omission. The L400 is never, ever harsh. It's always smooth."
    The cabinets were designed by the legendary German industrial arts master, Dieter Rams. They feature beautiful tight grained walnut with rounded edges and black perforated metal grills - timeless beauty.  The dimensions are 11.75 x 7.875 x 8 inches.  They sound equally good set on a the horizontal axis (and the grill badges can be popped out and re-positioned if you choose to set them on their long sides).
    You won't ever find a set of a/d/s L400e's from the final revision (one of the great compact speakers of all time) in nicer condition.
